A water stain or drip on your ceiling is a warning sign that water has already saturated the drywall and possibly the framing above. Here's what to do — and why you shouldn't wait.
1. Contain the Water
Put a bucket under the drip and move furniture and electronics out of the way. If the ceiling is bulging, water is pooling above it — from a safe distance, you can carefully puncture a small hole at the lowest point to drain it into a bucket and relieve the weight before it collapses.
2. Find and Stop the Source
Ceiling leaks come from a roof problem, a plumbing failure a floor above, or an overflowing fixture. If it's plumbing, shut off the water. If it's the roof, the leak will continue until it's addressed.
3. Don't Ignore the Stain
Even a small brown ring means the drywall and insulation above are wet. Trapped between floors, that water dries slowly — the perfect condition for mold, which can start within 24 to 48 hours. A wet ceiling can also sag and eventually collapse.
4. Document It
Photograph the stain and any damage for your insurance claim.
5. Call for Professional Help
A restoration team traces the leak with moisture meters and thermal imaging, dries the ceiling cavity and framing, treats for mold, and restores the finish so both the stain and the risk are gone — not just painted over.
